Keep your vintage clothing looking new!  We want to wear stuff that looks like it’s from our grandma’s era, NOT like our grandma has worn it every day for the last 50 years.  I’ve done some research on the proper way to care for, clean, and store vintage clothes.  Here are some important tips:

• Fold, don’t hang: Vintage fabrics are delicate and thus susceptible to hanger marks.  If you must hang a vintage item, make sure to use a rounded, padded hanger.  No wire hangers!
• Keep it airy: Store in a well ventilated, cool and dry spot.  Never store in plastic as it captures heat and heat leads to discoloration and the disintegration of fabric.
• Delicate wash: Dry cleaning can actually be bad for vintage clothing, especially lightweight cottons and silks, as the fabric may be too delicate to endure harsh chemicals.  Hand wash in cool water with minimal agitation.  Allow to soak with a small amount of detergent, changing the water frequently.  (Note: Wools, vintage or new, should always be washed in cool water with minimal agitation to avoid shrinking or felting.)
• Avoid washing altogether: After the initial first cleaning after acquiring an item, try your best to avoid washing the item altogether.  Be aware of wiping your hands on your legs, take extra perspiration precautions, don’t wear your vintage clothes to dive bars or to hike through muddy fields.  Try airing your clothing outside rather than throwing them in the laundry, and spot cleaning with a rag and cool water.
